July 23, 2013: The lawsuits were filed against Richard Hokanson, the troop leader; St. Pius X Catholic Church, which sponsored the troop; the Boy Scouts of America; and Gamehaven Council, a branch of the Scouts in southeastern Minnesota. The civil lawsuits were filed on behalf of two former Rochester residents who allege they were abused by a Boy Scout leader in the 1970s. Hokanson admitted to law enforcement officials in 1982 that he’d had sexual contact with 21 children who were participating in Scouting. Hokanson was sentenced to a 42-month stayed prison term in exchange for treatment in the intensive sexual abuse program at St. Peter. Upon completion of his treatment, Hokanson was imprisoned for 40 months on a 1994 child sex-abuse conviction.
