May 17, 2011 – SAN FERNANDO, Calif.—A Los Angeles parolee has been sentenced to life in prison for shooting his son’s mother and two men at a church carnival in 2008.
Prosecutor Ruby Arias says 36-year-old Fernando Diaz won’t be eligible for a parole hearing until he’s 98 years old.
Diaz was in a bitter custody battle with his ex-girlfriend when he showed up at the St. John Baptist de la Salle Church fundraiser in suburban Granada Hills and shot her as she was setting up a carnival booth.
The woman and two men who were also wounded recovered.
Diaz was convicted on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of being a felon with a firearm. He was acquitted of a third attempted murder count.

She was wounded in the elbow and two volunteers had bullet wounds.
Five parents, including off-duty police officers, tackled and disarmed Diaz.
A jury on Thursday convicted Diaz on two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a firearm and one count of being a felon with a firearm. He was acquitted of a third attempted murder count.

A ‘gentle’ minister was discovered dead inside his own Texas church after a passer-by looked through a window and spotted a body on the floor.
Pastor Clint Dobson, 29, was found inside NorthPointe Baptist Church in Arlington on Thursday afternoon, alongside his critically-injured ministry assistant Judy Elliott, 67.
Police believe a motive of robbery may have been behind the physical assaults, as some items were missing from the church. But there was no sign of forced entry.
The alarm was raised after a church employee’s family member became worried when they could not contact them and asked a friend to go and check on the building.
Their friend passed by, finding the church locked, and peered through different windows before seeing a motionless body and phoning police, who arrived soon after.
Another church employee gave emergency services a key to get inside. Ms Elliott was found severely beaten but is now in a stable condition in a Fort Worth hospital.

February 3, 2011 – A Florida man was sentenced to life in prison for killing Margarita Hidalgo, 51-years-of-age, while cleaning the Iglesia Adventista del Septimo Diachurch. Rafael Florian killed Margarita Hidalgo while burglarizing the church back in 2004. According to authorities, Florian stabbed Margarita Hidalgo in the stomach, hit her on the head and then suffocated her with a plastic bag. The body was discovered hid in a closet.
