Music minister arraigned on statutory rape charges

August 26, 2011 – Stephen B. Lindberg of Marstons Mills was arrested and arraigned on charges stemming from a Barnstable Police investigation into a past sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.

Lindberg, 54, was charged with 10 counts of statutory rape, one count of indecent assault and battery, one count of child enticement, two counts of indecent exposure and one count of violation of a protective order. Lindberg pleaded not guilty in Barnstable District Court and was being held on $10,000 bail.

According to a press statement from the department, Barnstable police started its investigation into the alleged assaults Aug. 8. Lindberg had served as the girl’s vocal and performance coach since 2007. The alleged assault started in late 2010, according to the police, when the girl was 14, and continued through the end of June.

Lindberg served as music minister at Unity of Cape Cod on Walton Avenue in Hyannis. The church’s board of trustees issued the following statement Aug. 23:

“The Board of Trustees of Unity on Cape Cod is shocked and saddened to learn of the charges brought against music director, Steve Lindberg. Based on these charges, the board has voted to terminate his contract, effective immediately. The safety of the congregation and the wider community are our highest priority. While the police assure us that, thus far in their investigation, none of the charges against Mr. Lindberg stem from activities taking place in the church, the board feels that the serious nature of the charges warrant immediate termination.”

Pastor May Have Sexually Assaulted Victim 60 Times

August 26, WALKER, Mich.— New details about the Walker pastor, Tedd Butler, 46, accused of sex assaults against two young boys. We obtained court documents that tell us Butler sexually abused one victim between the years of 1984-1992. During those years the victim was only between the ages of 3-9.

The court documents indicate he may have been sexually abused as many as 50-60 times.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies started investigating Butler, pastor of Gospel Light Baptist Church since 2003, more than a year ago after a young boy told his parents that Butler had touched him inappropriately when back in 2006.  Detectives say the boy went to Bulter’s church and was five years old at the time of the alleged incident.

The led investigators to make hundreds of calls to past churches and church members.  They found a 30 year old man, who is now living in a different state.  The man said Butler performed sexual acts on him when he was around five years old, back in the late ’80s.  Butler was working at Landmark Baptist Church in Algoma back then.

According to detectives, the church used to bus in kids from Grand Rapids for youth programs and that’s where the alleged victim met Butler.  He faces first degree criminal sexual conduct for that case in Kent County.

Butler is currently out on $100,000 bond.  His attorney and the churches involved were not available for comment.

Butler turned himself in on Wednesday. Butler previously served at churches in Princeville, IL, and in Newaygo, MI. His arraignment for the Kent County case is scheduled for August 31st.

Baptist pastor accused of sex assaults

August 27, 2011 – GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The pastor of a Walker Baptist church is expected in court Thursday to face charges he sexually assaulted two boys, each under 13, that he met through the church.

The Rev. Tedd Butler, pastor of the Gospel Light Baptist Church, is accused of two separate offenses.

In Ottawa County, he’s facing second-degree sexual assault — that is, improper touching – in Ottawa County’s Tallmadge Township. Records show he lives in that township, but it’s not known whether these alleged offenses happened at his home.

But in northern Kent County, authorities told 24 Hour News 8 he’s being charged with first-degree sexual assault with a different boy.

Ottawa County investigators said the alleged assaults happened years ago.

Butler, 46, is married with children and has no criminal record.

The church’s web site shows he joined Gospel Light Baptist Church in 2003 after working as a youth pastor at a Baptist church in Newaygo.

Police told 24 Hour News 8 he turned himself in Wednesday morning at the Allegan County Jail. It’s unknown why he chose to surrender in Allegan.

Neighbors told 24 Hour News 8 the family moved out about six weeks ago and put their house up for sale.

Butler is expected in court Thursday morning.

Edenton Children Minister Charged In Internet Sex Crimes Case, Congregation In Shock

Aug 3, 2011 -

An Edenton children minister has been charged with internet sex crimes involving children.

Jonathan Rose was arrested Monday by the S.B.I. and the North Carolina Internet Crimes against Children Task Force.

Cumberland County deputies say the 35-year-old Rose engaged in illegal conversations with children via his computer.

Deputies say they had been looking for him for a couple of weeks, and on Monday went to his Dakota Trail home in Edenton and found out he was taking children from his church to a camp in Black Mountain, which is in the western part of the state. Rose was arrested as he stepped off the bus at the Ridgecrest Boys Camp.

Cumberland County deputies say Rose is a minister at Rocky Hock Baptist Church in Edenton. He’s been charged with solicitation of child by computer to commit unlawful sex acts and is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Senior Pastor Dr. James Horton of the church says he called a meeting with his congregation Tuesday night about the charges filled against Rose who has been with the church three years. Horton says, “It’s just an absolute shock to us. We just don’t know what to think or to make of it. Like I say we don’t know the content of it or what the accusations entail or exactly what happened so were just waiting to find out.”

Horton says rose has a wife and four children all under the age of 12 and came to their Edenton church from the Raleigh area with a good background.

The church’s web site says Pastor Jonathan Rose is their music and children minister.
